Thoughts on CAD from Victoria

The Connecting across difference project has been a very fulfilling experience for me. There are various layers to consider when recounting my experience. Once upon a time, a bunch of musician/technicians/visual artists got together to discuss how to get Children from different schools with various access needs to come together and share stories about their lives. Their idea was an inclusive one and though the structure was a little vague, the inclusive nature of the idea, gave room for every member of the team to participate and make this idea a reality.

The planning meetings were very useful in informing us about the aim of the project and preparing our minds for the nature of the piece to be performed at the end. We were introduced to various ways of linking sound to visual effects, tools like the Eidophones, Lazer beams, Wakon Tablet, and the Chaos pads were fun to discover. I particularly loved the positive words that we jotted down in the planning meetings and I feel that the kaleidoscope of ideas that we shared, added to the multifaceted performance at the end.

I really enjoyed working with the Children at Arnhem Wharf Primary because it was a two way learning process. They got to understand different ways of communicating when they worked with me, and I gained a lot from listening to their very creative ideas. I feel that the Museum Visit was a great way of preparing their minds for the activities they carried out during the workshop. Working with Kerry and Daryl has helped me to confront my fears about dealing with large groups by showing me strategies to ensure that I engage the groups I work with. I have gained more confidence in dealing with large groups and planning workshop sessions.

Another aspect of this project I particularly found useful were the mentoring sessions I had. I was given an opportunity to voice my ideas about what career path I wanted to take and with the guidance of my Mentor Lynn, we discussed problems I encountered and identified my goals. I can safely say that things I once considered to be obstacles, are now seen as opportunities for me to broaden my horizons. I feel more in control of my life since I now know the actions I need to take in order to have a fulfilling career .

Words I will take away with me are:

Enable, Empower, Explore, Expose, Broaden, communicate, Connect, and Progress. I will do my best to incorporate these words in my train of thoughts when working with people.

Remembering The Spell

As a member of the audience the final performance of The Spell was electrifying. A couple of weeks have now passed and still some wonderful memories of the event…

  • The mixture of playful, dramatic and sometimes unstructured improvisation in contrast with moments of composed, contemplative ensemble playing; which still created an overall musical experience.
  • The way in which the young people supported and worked together with their own and others groups.
  • Kerry’s wild and entertaining conducting style ; ) › Continue reading

Visit to The Roundhouse

I had a great visit to the Roundhouse project last week. There was quite a large group of participants, with a really wide range of abilities.

I was there for the afternoon session and Ed led a story telling exercise where the whole group got involved in creating a narrative, which included families of mushrooms, evil and pretty pixies, gangs of squirrels(of which I was one), fireworks, and more! Participants then took on a role in the story and created sounds to illustrate their character. The whole story with music and characters saying their lines was recorded at the end of the session.

It all went very well, and it was a really nice way to involve and engage everyone in the group. Melanie has also taken some great photos which we are using in the programme and I hope to get some of them up here soon as well. Well done Roundhouse Team!

Question Nick and Melanie (and Kerry!)

Hey Guys hope you enjoyed the roundhouse week as much as I did. My question to you is this: how are we going to go about integrating the recordings and images into the final performance at the V&A Museum of Childhood!! And when are we going to meet to put together the final edited recording!!!??

Beatrice Tate Draw Some Music!

One of the pieces of technology we have been trying out in the workshops at all of the schools is a Wacom Graphics Tablet. Conventionally used as an alternative to a mouse, Wacom Tablets allow the user to move the position the mouse pointer by drawing on the tablet - however, this can easily be reappropriated to control other data, in this case triggering chords on a Virtual Rhodes Keyboard. Below is a clips of Shahena from Beatrice Tate playing the Wacom Tablet, which was programmed with chords from Kerry’s Score - which will ultimately provide an accompanyment to Victoria’s solo in the final piece!
